| First Bike Map (please don't laugh) |
VaVega, friend ol' buddy ol' pal, what a great idea.
Thanks to her, Gentle Readers, I can put up my first bicycle map. The following is as far as I've gotten so far. You can't see the detail around Naarden and Bussum--this may call for a close-up map of 't Gooi in later versions.

As with all things on this blog, this will get better with time...but I didn't want to wait. We may have fun with this: besides a local closeup from which 't Gooi residents will be able to make out the city layouts, I may also eventually be able to make a "movie" of the building coverage. Stay tuned...

Where do I buy a bike map of Amsterdam and surrounding area. We are planning an 11 day trip in June and want to travel around by bike. What about hotels or other places to stay?
There are two main map series for cycling around the Netherlands. Happily, both are sold at the popular ANWB stores, of which there are several in and around Amsterdam. You want the ones with maps, not just the ones with travel agencies. I don't know which are which in Amsterdam--your hotel can help you out.
The more popular of the cycling map series is the glossy Fietsroute-Atlas 1:75000 books. They open to fit a standard Dutch cycling map rack on the handlebars.
But I've noticed that serious cyclists use the fold-out paper Kaart voor Vakantie en Vrije Tijd 1:50000 maps. The glossy books have (peculiarly for the Dutch) a fairly large number of errors. The first time you come to a "bridge" that is actually a ferry that doesn't run on Sunday, you'll know what I mean. Unfortunately, and weirdly, they don't have these maps for the Amsterdam city itself.
Your best bet: Get the glossy Noord-Holland book for Amsterdam, and maybe the fold-out 1:50000 if you're venturing more than 10 km from Amsterdam center.
Hotels around the area? You can try expedia.com or tripadvisor.com.
Good luck!
you're welcome! ;) now i can start to see how far and wide you have cycled. but you're right, you do need a more detailed map than what ol Bill has in streets.
what are the distinctions for the red and blue routes?
do you have any more information on that gorgeous boat in photo #2?
